Youth urged to donate blood to aid blood supply crisis in KZN.

The South African National Blood Service is facing a major stock shortage in Kwa Zulu-Natal. It has been reported that KZN currently has a blood stock of 200 units of Group O blood and that is lower than the recommended amount of 500 units that should be available every day.

The SANBS’s  Sifiso Khoza says the stock of Group O blood that is available in the province will be exhausted by tomorrow morning.

“At the moment, we have 1.8 days cover of Group O. Group O is the universal blood type that can be transfused to anyone in an emergency situation. So we are in dire need of donors to please come forward,” he says.

He says this will put many patients at risk, including cancer patients and women who experience difficulties in childbirth and require life-saving blood transfusions.

The KZN Health MEC has urged the youth especially to heed the call as their in a better position to assist.

“We rely a lot on young people because they’re healthy. We need everybody – 16 years up to 65. We rely mostly on young people, because you may be 65 – but if you have heart disease, kidney disease, you probably don’t qualify…” he said.
