UNIZULU ALSO SHUTS DOWN OVER SAFETY PROTESTS

Students of the Zululand University (UNIZULU) at Dlangezwa campus have shut down the campus since yesterday after a student was shot at an outside campus residence.

Students have called for the university to shut down and have been protesting in concern of their safety as students who live outside campus are frequently attacked.

This was after a male student was allegedly shot on Sunday and is in hospital after refusing to hand over his belonging to intruders. The intruders are believed to be a notorious gang who are allegedly responsible for stealing from students who live outside campus.

This is merely a week after a DUT student Sandile Ndlovu was attacked on campus and he is fighting for his life in hospital.

Classes have since been suspended at DUT since Friday, September 13.

It was reported that all the roads that lead to UNIZULU were blocked with stones and students were advised to stay away from campus as no one was allowed to enter or exit the institution.

The march started peacefully but things took a turn when students were shot and arrested. The protestors also went to Qhakaza, Dlangezwa high schools, and all the other schools around to ask the students there to join the march, and they allegedly set the police station alight.

The university’s management released a statement yesterday acknowledging the incident that had happened, they also stated that the injured student is receiving medical attention and he is in a stable condition.

In the statement they also mentioned that they have a meeting rescheduled today with the student representatives from the off campus student movement and Inkosi Mkhwanazi to discuss the matter.

30 students from KwaDlangezwa campus that were arrested are expected to appear at the Esikhaleni Magistrates court.

The rest of the students have been requested to vacate residences today by 13h00.
