The Mahatma Gandhi Lecture pays tribute to Mam’Winnie Madikizela Mandela!

2018 marks the 125th anniversary of the arrival of Mahatma Gandhi in South Africa as well as what would have been the 100th birthday of the ‘icon of icons’ Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela.

This year the Mahatma Gandhi Media Lecture was held at the Durban University of Technology, City Campus. In this lecture the speakers paid tribute to Mam’ Nomzamo Winnie Madikizela Mandela. At this the lecture greatly focused on the long struggle that Nelson Mandela and Mam’ Winnie went through.

A video in memory of the “Mother of the Nation’ courtesy of Anant Singh’s Videovision was screened, showing the life of Mam’ Winnie during the struggle days and after.

The main guest speaker was Sello Hatang, Chief Executive Officer at the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

“We need to know what the struggle was for, we must try to find the Mandela and mam’Winnie in us in order to continue the struggle,” said Sello Hatang.

Hatang continued to urge the new journalists and upcoming journalists to tell the stories the right way, to continue telling South Africa’s story to the world in the manner that will allow the audience to receive the country in the positive manner.

The MEC for Human Settlement and Public Works of KwaZulu Natal, Ravi Pillay sent his letter in honour of mam’Winnie.

“That task of uniting our people and building our country rests with each of us. That task rests with you. Mama Winnie’s work is done. Our work remains. Let us dedicate ourselves to tasks of our time inspired by her vision and her legacy. May her soul rest in peace,” statement issued by the MEC.

The talk will be back next year. In hopes to grow journalism students in their craft.
