Much at stake for the KZN Athletics Cross Country Championships

KZN Athletics is ready to host the 2017 provincial Cross-Country championship, scheduled for 12 August 2017 at the Beaulieu Dam in Richmond.

The championships, hosted by Richmond AC, is a selection event at which a team will be picked to Compete at the SA Cross Country Championships, that will take place in Potchefstroom, North West Province in September.

KZNA president Sello Mokoena anticipates a big turnout from local athletes from the different district that have been hosting the different cross-country leagues.

“The goal this year is to send out a stronger and bigger team to the national championships, with the hopes of winning the competition after finishing third out of the 17 athletics provinces in the past two years. We aim to select all the best and have been encouraging our clubs to ensure that the standard produced this year is a notch higher than previous years,” said Mokoena.

To qualify for selection athletes are required to participate in at least two league events plus the provincial championships.

The season consists of 13 leagues as well as the development events, which are leagues in rural local municipalities integrating local schools. These leagues take place in different areas of the province and consist of 8 race events per league.

“Cross Country is as closest to a perfect development event as one can get and caters for all ages, which makes it a more convenient and measurable running programme that allows growth in the development of young runners,” said Mokoena

Reports from various host clubs to date have been of a positive note, and that makes the province confident that the provincial championships will be a great wrap to a successful season.
