Minister denies receiving Shaik’s application

Pretoria – Justice and Correctional Services Minister Advocate Michael Masutha has refuted claims that he has received an application from offender Schabir Shaik for conversion of his medical parole to ordinary parole.

“There is no legal provision which allows any conversion of medical parole to ordinary parole. Therefore, any such application will be dealt with in terms of the aforementioned provisions,” the Minister said.

Shaik was found guilty of corruption and fraud in 2005. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison on each of two counts of corruption, as well as three years for fraud.

He was taken home in an ambulance after being released on medical parole in 2009, after serving two years and four months in jail. –
