Meet your ‘new’ minister – Blade Nzimande!

It’s been a week after the appointment of the new Cabinet for the 6th Parliament by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

One of the most anticipated moves was the shrinking of cabinet which shrunk from 36 to 28 ministries.

Higher education and training has been merged with Science and Technology with Dr Blade Nzimande being appointed as the minster.

Nzimande served in the higher education and Training ministry from 2008 to 2017 before being reshuffled by Former President Jacob Zuma just before his exit.

However Nzimande’s appointment didn’t seem be welcomed by some Durban University of Technology students.

Third year Journalism student Sinoxolo Mahlatshana said that this appointment doesn’t benefit black students.

“It’s an insult to the students within institutions of higher learning and those who are planning to access such institutions,” said Mahlatshana.

She also added that “the years of ‘FeesMustFall’ took place under his ministry” and that he “lacks in that department.”

Meanwhile Second year Quantity Surveyor student Ndumiso Gininda says “He should be fired.”

While some had an idea of the changes within cabinet, Sakhile Sibiya who is a second year construction student says that he was unaware of the changes.

“I didn’t even know that such a thing happened, when was this?” asked Sibiya.
