DUT SRC Update on student’s issues

Greetings to the DUT constituency, welcome our weekly updates on students issues and what steps has the SRC taken to address them.

•Funded new applicants
We have received from NSFAS the list of DUT funded new applicants for 2017 coded as NN17. NSFAS will communicate to these students regarding their funding status, from DUT these students will be sent SMS’s after being coded.
•Returning successful/unsuccessful students
We have received from NSFAS the list is for successful (coded as N217) and unsuccessful (coded as UC17) students. NSFAS will communicate to these students regarding their funding status, from DUT these students will be sent SMS’s after being coded.
Appeal forms are now available from NSFAS website and Financial Aid offices, we will start accepting appeal forms from Thu 26 Jan 2017 to Tue 31 Jan 2017. Students who should appeal are both new and returning students that are unsuccessful for 2017. Appeal forms should be submitted to Financial Aid.
•Unsigned Loan Agreement Forms
We noted that some students belonging under these categories; historic debt 2013, historic debt 2014, historic debt 2015 and MTU6 have not signed LAFs for them to be paid accordingly. If you fall under any of these categories and have not signed your LAF please visit the SRC offices to check your name on the list.
•2016 Final years
All NSFAS 2016 final years (coded as FYN6) that are owing the institution have been unblocked for results. These students are also unblocked for BTech registration regardless of what they owe provided that they pay only the registration fee.

We also note that some students that were final years and have some fees due to them, the institution is resisting to allow these students to register with what is due to them. The SRC is the process to address this matter.

All new / prospective students with firm offers that have not registered yet due to mainly financial reasons, the SRC has negotiated with the management that their spaces are not taken away because of their financial status but keep them reserved until necessary funds are available for them since NSFAS also has not responded to all applicants.

A provisional arrangement for registration has been made for students in their final year, who were unable to settle their arrear fees:
1. Students are required to obtain a letter from their academic department, confirming that they are in their final year of study.
2. You are then required to sign an acknowledgement of debt with the Finance department.
3. You can then proceed to your faculty registration venue to register.

The institution is currently experiencing a shortage of beds, which has led to some students not being allocated but temporarily allocated in university residences such as Berea Res and Baltimore due to the institution failing to effectively make arrangements in time. The SRC has however intervened in this regard by assisting the institution to address this shortage of beds by securing more residences.

The SRC from its budget has made funds available in a form of a grant to assist deserving students with registration fee, in this regard we prioritise first years. Students in need of such assistance are advised to fill in the SRC Grant application form at the SRC offices accompanied by supporting documents (same as NSFAS documents.

Those who have not received any NSFAS communication till now please report to the SRC offices so that we can write you on our list and evaluate your cases. Furthermore the SRC offices are always open for consultation on student related matters.

The DUT SRC offices are based at the Open House Building, 3rd Floor, Steve Biko Road. Operating hours; 8h00 to 16h00 from Monday to Friday.
