Distinctions granted Siphesihle fee remission every year.

“I haven’t had to worry about my fees since first year. I’ve qualified for a fee remission every year.”

A 22-year-old Pietermaritzburg’s Siphesihle Rachel Sibiya perceives financial issues as one of the contributing factors to her good results.

Sibiya graduated with a Diploma of Civil Engineering at the Durban University of Technology on Tuesday morning.

The Durban graduation ceremonies of DUT started on Monday, 6 May 2019 and will end on Tuesday, 14 May 2019. All sessions will be held at the Fred Crookes Sport Centre, Durban.

After having obtained matric certificate, already a year behind her high school peers Sibiya decided to upgrade her maths.

Sibiya said she has always been surrounded by people who believe in her.

“So, I felt I had to prove myself to them and to me,” she said.

With finances being Sibiya’s biggest challenge, she got a relief after her former Civil Engineering Lecturer Desiree Cele told the class that they can have access to free education provided they excelled academically.

“She told us our entire academic careers could be free provided we do well. That really set me free.” Sibiya said.

Financial difficulties seems to be the common issue for first year students that are coming from rural areas. Sibiya believes finances should be the last thing to worry about.

It’s honestly been overwhelming, partly because it didn’t sink in until this morning that she is graduating. Even with all the preparations the day still seemed faraway, but this morning when the parents sat her down expressed how proud they are, everything just got real.

“I’M GRADUATING!!! A whole diploma, an entire qualification? Me? Wow. The past 3 years have amounted to this? God is truly good”

Sibiya paid her sincere gratitude to God, saying some people could not get to see this day; her family and friends who have been supportive from the beginning.
